What is Depression?

It is a common mental illness that can affect any people regardless of age, gender, social status, and health. To put it in simple terms, you can say depression is the feeling where you have no motivation to do anything.

Hello, my name is Charm and I've been trying to handle depression and anxiety for as long as I can remember but I am not a mental health professional. All content that I have provided in this blog is for informational purposes only. It is not advice. If you need medical advice, you should seek professional help.

This is my story; I've been dealing with depression for as long as I can remember. I was going through some of the conflicting and overwhelming emotions over the last couple of years which scared the thought of me waking up to another day to face my demons. Being a breadwinner and soon to be the first college graduate in my family has put a lot of pressure on me to succeed. I was stressed to the point that I wanted to quit my studies and runaway. I stopped trusting my family, friends, and people who cared about me. I experienced constant mood swings and had days where I didn't have the motivation to do anything.

To overcome my harsh reality, I did side hustles by promoting places and brands which gave me the opportunity to travel. This was my silver lining where I could escape reality and forget all about my worries and troubles for a short period of time. While traveling around the Philippines, I was blessed to meet some of the kindest people who are less fortunate than me. They shared their day to day life struggles and experiences which made me focus and appreciate the good things I had in my life. This experience had a huge impact on my life and changed my way of thinking and helped me overcome depression.

Here are some of the useful tips that helped me to overcome stress:

1. Unplug from Technology
Nowadays we let social media dictate our life. We have become so reliant on technology; we lose track of reality. The excessive use of technology can cause health issues that you are already may be aware of. The best way to de-stress is to unplug the technology around you. Go for a walk , travel and explore around instead of checking your Facebook or Instagram to like or comment.

2. Forgive Yourself
Stress can have a great toll on your mind. If someone has hurt you, you wanted an apology but you never got that apology. So, how do you move on from this situation? The first thing you want to do is to acknowledge what had happened and find a way to move forward. Self-forgiveness is a great step forward to overcome stress. After all, we are just human and we deserve forgiveness.
Prayers always help me to clear up my mind.

3. Physical Activity
In the 21st century, seven out of ten people experience stress or anxiety daily. This number is getting higher with rapid changing surroundings. Stress can be difficult to eliminate; however, you can learn to manage stress effectively. According to an online poll, 1 in 10 people exercise to deal with stress. Embracing the different type of exercises like aerobics, yoga, or going for a run can help you get healthy and avoid being depressed This is one of the most effective ways and recommended by health professionals. Regular exercises can make you feel great both physically and mentally.
Hiking is one of the best things to do in my province (Rizal). It's surrounded with beautiful mountains.

4. Go Travelling
Travelling is one of my passion and a great stress reliever. Whatever style of travel you prefer, getting away from the norm and experience new places and cultures is a great way to refresh both your body and mind. Travelling creates inspiration which can help change our view of those around us. When you meet people who have made life choices on what they want and not based on what society expects, this can help open up new thoughts and beliefs. When you travel, you have the freedom to see, eat and do what you want.

5. Vitamin Supplements
Most people would try not to rely on medication as an option to overcome stress. According to the Tufts University Framingham Offspring Study, 40% of all adults suffer from B12 deficiency which is one of the main causes of depression. Natural remedies like multivitamins can be a great alternative to prescription drugs to overcome depression. Multivitamins can be used as a supplement to provide vitamins to your body to maintain a balanced level of each vitamin to maintain your overall mood.

I take Ultima Vitamins every day to help me reach my daily recommended intakes of essential nutrients. It is a high-quality food supplement which helps in reducing my stress level and increase my overall energy and stamina.
Me and my friends always take ultima vitamins to give us more energy, specially during our travels.

Final Thoughts
When you feel stressed; try to change or remove the source of your stress, change your way of thinking on how you view a stressful event and learn stress management techniques. With practice and healthy habits – you can learn to manage your stress in your everyday life. By reducing your stress, you can have a better and happy life.
